What with Liberace making an unlikely comeback of sorts via the new HBO docu-drama Behind The Candelabra, it was a good moment to reveal that the real Liberace could be funny too, as revealed in this long-lost recording.
In only a few short years, Liberace rose to national prominence after he got his own 15-minute TV show in 1952. His audience grew so fast that he made several very large concert appearances, including one that was recorded on Sept 4, 1954 at the Hollywood Bowl. The concert was cut up and released on Lp, but this little track My TV Sponsors was left off the Lp, and all subsequent re-releases for the next 59 years. Perhaps it was just too odd. It is only found on the 45rpm set of singles that made up the album in 7-inch form, not a very popular way to listen to a concert.
You’ll hear Liberace talk about his sponsors, his mom, and the toilet paper company that keeps him stocked in product.
